Born 31 January 1921 in Barbados. His father Joseph was a civil servant in Barbados. Both Charles and his brother David returned to England in September 1937 to complete their education at Ratcliff College, Leicestershire |
Charles had been posted in as part of 950706 Sgt. Ralph Brown's crew on 1 Feb 1943 from 1660CU. He flew 18 operations with this crew, they were lost on 22 April 1943 when ED799 was shot down on a gardening operation off Spain. |
Each year in November the local people of Harderwijk hold a ceremony to honour the 43 airmen who lie in their cemetery. |

Reason for Loss | Shot down by a night-fighter flown by Hptm. Rudolf Sigmund of 10./NJG1 10km north of Edam and crashed into the IJsselmeer near Hoorn, Netherlands. The bodies of the crew washed ashore at different locations between 3 and 5 July. Hobbs washed up near Kirk 5 July, Sams washed up nr Elburg 5 July, Mott and Bishop washed up at Urk, King washed ashore South of Harderwijk 5 July and Slater's body was recovered from the Ijsselmeer on 5 July at 01.40hrs found floating between Elburg & Urk by local Elburg fisherman, JW Nant Goor fishing boat EB62. |
