Charles was born on 18 October 1921 at Melfort, Saskatchewan. His father was born in Exeter, Ontario and worked as a Merchant and Auctioneer and his mother was born in Forest, Ontario. He had a sister Almena who was training to be a nurse, a brother Douglas, and an older brother Robert who was a Lieutenant in the Canadian Postal Corps. He attended schools in Melfort, Saskatchewan: Melfort Public. 1927-1935 (General); Melfort High, 1935-1940 (General). He had High School Entrance and Senior Matric.grade XII. This was followed by Melfort Technical College (commercial). Between 1937 and 1940 Charles took on several part time jobs working as a clerk. His sporting interests were skating, swimming and basketball, his favourite being skiing. His hobby was reading, history and psychology. |
Charles enlisted on 14 March 1941 and was embarking from Canada for the U.K. on 3 November 1941. He arrived at 3 PRC on 14 November 1941, 23 OTU 16 December 1941, and was at 142 Squadron on 11 June 1942. He lost his life a little over two months later. |
