| Born 2 January 1921, Carmarthen. His mother Elizabeth died aged 23 in 1923. His father was living in Plumstead, London. Herbert was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. David John Jones of Brynderwen, Llanarthney. Herbert was admitted to the local school on 18 May 1926 and obtained a free place at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen in September 1932 (he was a very bright child). Enlisted as an apprentice in the 34th entry 1936-39, posted to a fighter squadron in Scotland in 1939, remustered to F/E. This was his 20th Op. |

| Reason for Aircraft Loss | Shot down by a night-fighter flown by Fw. Wilhelm Kurreck, of 8./NJG3 and crashed in flames 1km NE of Grossenaspe and 10km South of Neumunster at 23.50hrs. The crew were initially buried in Neumunster Civil Cemetery on 8 April 1943 and were reburied on 6 September 1946. |
