Miscellaneous Information
Stirling III EE956 T/O RAF Winthorpe 23:34 on a night gunnery/navigation training sortie. Within 30 minutes of take off the aircraft encountered severe icing, leading to loss of control and the aircraft started to spiral down. The RAF report stated that "the aircraft broke up in Cumulus cloud and caught fire following loss of control, the icing index was high. It was thought that the excessive loads imposed by the loss of control caused a structural failure of the tail." At around 23:53, most of the debris crashed into a quarry northwest of Rothwell, Northants. When the quarry ceased operation in 1994 a spinney of trees was planted at the crash site and named "Stirling Spinney" in memory of the crew. |
