Miscellaneous Information
John's mother Agnes Pollock (1896–1966) married John Hopkins (1885–1934) on 15 July 1908. They lived in East Main Street, Darvel, Ayrshire. They had 2 sons, Robert, born in 1910 and John (Jock) in 1916. John and Robert went to the local school in Darvel where they had a good education. They grew up in a loving Christian family. John and his wife, Agnes, worked in the mills. John had rheumatoid arthritis and was confined to a wheelchair at an early age. His father had a grocery shop so Agnes and John worked in the business. Robert and John had a happy childhood and John always had a dog, kept ferrets and hens and owned a motorbike.
Robert worked in the lace industry and John joined the RAF in 1936. He attended courses, one at de Havilland. He thoroughly enjoyed his life and was promoted to Corporal in 1939 and then Sergeant. His brother Robert also joined the RAF and his wife Margaret joined the WAAF. They were all stationed in various places in England. John met Doris (Doss) Hunter (1921–1966) who lived in the High Street, Brampton, Huntingdonshire with her mother, Daisy, and her father, Arthur (Boss). John and Doris loved going to dances. They became engaged and planned their wedding, which took place on 23 March 1940. They lived in Gainsborough and were excited when Doris became pregnant. The baby was due in April 1941.
He kept a diary of his bombing raids which included Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Essen, Frankfurt, Dunkirk.
Doris returned to Brampton to live with her parents after John's death and on 17 April 1941 she gave birth to her daughter, June Hopkins. Tragically, John never got to see his daughter. Doris and June made regular visits to Darvel throughout their lives to visit the wider Hopkins family and June still meets with her cousin Ian Hopkins, Robert's son.
