Miscellaneous Information
Robert was born on 23 February 1919 at St. Thomas, Ontario. Both parents were born at St. Thomas where his father was a Department Store manager. He had just one sister, Grace Jean. Robert went to a variety of schools, starting with Nesbit Symonde 1924-1925. He then attended Kensington Public school 1925- 1927, Willington P.S. 1927-1931, West Hill High School, 1931-1935 finishing at Guelph Collegiate Institute 1935-1937 (Matric). He also went to Queen’s University on a banking course. His sport interests were rugby, hockey and basketball. Between 1937-1941 Robert worked as a bank teller at the Royal Bank of Canada. |
On 9 April 1941 he enlisted and after initial training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 1 May 1942 arriving at 3 PRC on 12 May 1942. He went on to 3(0)AFU 8 June 1942, 22 OTU 7 July 1942. He is sadly next shown as losing his life on 14 September 1942. |

Reason for Loss | Airborne 23:27. Crashed into the North Sea. The body of F/S R.H.Galipeau RCAF was washed ashore near Lakolk on the island of Rømø on 16 Oct 1942 and was buried in Kirkeby Cemetery, Denmark. The other members of the crew have no known graves and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. F/Sgt Galipeau and Sgt MacArthur were American citizens from Minnesota and Massachusetts who had joined the Canadian air force. |
