Miscellaneous Information
| Born 28 November 1917, Hovingham. His father, John Goodwill was a butcher and smallholder. He went to the village school and on, with a scholarship, to Malton Grammar School. After leaving school he worked for his father for a while but on 13 September 1939 he joined the RAF, being trained as a wireless operator. After aircrew training in the summer of 1939 he had brief periods with two operational bomber squadrons and was finally posted to No. 44 Squadron at RAF Waddington in January 1940. He was promoted to Sergeant on 27 May 1940. The squadron was at the time equipped with Hampden medium bombers and in the summer of 1940 was primarily engaged in mine-laying and bombing coastal targets. He took part in 15 operations between late July and 11 September. On 11 September 1940, during a raid on Bremerhaven and Hamburg, his aircraft was shot down and crashed into the sea. The bodies of two of the crew (Pilot Officer D.E. Stewart and Sergeant J.G. Hobson) were recovered from the sea and Sergeant Goodwill's body was washed ashore on 16 September. The body of the fourth member of the crew, Sergeant D.A. Joyce, was lost at sea. All three were buried locally, but the bodies were later transferred by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to the Becklingen War Cemetery. There is a stone tablet in his memory in Hovingham church, at the south side of the chancel arch (see Other Memorials, above). |
