| Reason for Aircraft Loss | Attacked by a night-figthter on the outward leg in part due to excellent visibility and lack of cloud cover. One engine is knocked out but the crew decided to proceed and bomb the target, which they successfully carried out. On the return leg they once again came under attack by a night-fighter, killing the rear gunner and causing a fire. The Captain ordered the aircraft be abandoned but in that instant the night-fighter hit the aircraft again, seriously injuring the bomb aimer. Unconscious, he was helped to the aircraft door and pushed out while holding the D-ring of his parachute but he was found to be dead on the ground when attended by the second pilot. The aircraft crashed near Werkendan (Noord-Brabant). Captain Plt Off Hingley landed on a bridge and was admitted to hospital with a broken thigh bone. He spent the remainder of his time in captivity in hospital. |
