Miscellaneous Information
| Flight Sergeant Cooke was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal following an incident which occurred a month before he was killed in action. On October 31, 1944, his Lancaster came under sustained anti-aircraft fire during a bombing raid on Cologne. His aircraft was rapidly losing fuel and unable to make it back to England. He chose to land in Allied-held Belgium and as they approached, he ordered the crew to bail out. They all left safely except for F/S McCoubrey, who accidently pulled his ripcord inside the aircraft. Instead of getting out, Cooke helped McCoubrey into a spare chute, but by then, their altitude was too low to jump. Cooke returned to the controls and managed a controlled-crash landing in safe territory. |
