Reason for Loss | Last heard on W/T sending SOS indicating the port engine had failed and height could not be maintained. It is assumed that shortly after 18:06, the Wellington went into the sea in position 5718N 0108E (some 70 miles East of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire). Other crews reported extremely inclement weather, coupled with heavy seas. The loss of lives in a single incident was the most grievous since the formation of the Bomber Command OTUs. |
