Miscellaneous Information
This aircraft was one of a batch of 450 Manchesters ordered from A. V. Roe (Chadderton) in January 1940 of which 207 were built as Lancaster 1, and delivered from July to November 1942 initially fitted with Merlin 20 engines. This aircraft was delivered to 9 Squadron 10Sep42. W4186 was one of two 9 Sqn Lancasters lost on this operation. See W4765. When lost W4186 was on its first operation and had a total of 8 hours. Lost without trace. |
Maurice was born on 15 April 1920 at Newark, New Jersey, USA. His father (Dr. Buechler) was born in Hungary, an American Citizen and worked as a dentist. His mother was also an American citizen born in USA. He attended the following schools: Morton Street 1925-1929, Newark Academy 1929- 1932, Cleveland Junior High 1932-1933, West Side High 1933-1937, and Franklin & Marshall College 1937-1940. During 1938 he also went to the University of Tennessee Summer School. Between 1940-1941 Maurice was unemployed. The sports he enjoyed playing were tennis, basketball, swimming and boating. He enlisted 17 Septemebr 1941 (whilst the US was still neutral) and trained at St. Hubert, Valcartier, Victorianville, Jarvis and Halifax. He did not take an oath. After enlisting he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 8 January 1942, arriving at 3PRC on 21 January 1942. He was then at 7 AGS 20 February 1942, 20 OTU 21 April 1942, 9 Squadron 3 July 1942, and 9 Squadron again 28 July 1942. Promoted to F/S on 15 August 1942. Injured while on operational duties and resumed his tour once recovered. Sadly Maurice then died on 16 September 1942. |
