Miscellaneous Information
Nicholas was born on 10 December 1919 in Toronto. His father was born in Armenia and his mother in Edinburgh, Scotland. His family lived in Sandwich Street, Windsor. He was one of four children having a brother John Johnston Baker, and two sisters , Esther and Margaret Ellen. He went to Marlborough Public School 1925-1932 (High School Entrance), Sandwich Collegiate 1932-1938 (Snr, Matric,). He then went to night school at Wayne University, Detroit to study maths and chemistry, between 1939-1940. For extra money he would caddy after school at the Windsor-Essex golf club, was in charge of the coffee room in a cafeteria and carried out several other odd jobs. Between 1 August 1940 and 16 September 1941, Nicholas was working as a laboratory assistant at the R.C.A.M.C. Nicholas’s sporting interests were hockey, swimming and baseball. |
He enlisted on 17 September 1941 and after early training embarked from Halifax on 27 May 1943, arriving at 3 PRC in the U.K. on 5 June 1943. He reached 6 (0)AFU On 3 August 1943, 82 OTU 31 August 1943, 1651 CU on 26 November 1943 and 101 Squadron on 2 March 1944. He lost his life four weeks later. |
Nicholas changed his Turkish name from Nicolas Ekmakjian to Nicholas Baker. |
