Miscellaneous Information
| There is some confusion on the markings of this aircraft, which can be explained as follows: 422697 F/O Billy Kent Purdy RAAF had almost completed his 30 missions on a previous JO-G (LM551), when his crew were given a short period of leave. When he returned to RAF Waddington, he learned that JO-G had been lost whilst being flown by another crew (F/O Gifford and crew - see losses.internationalbcc.co.uk/loss/108613). When the replacement Lancaster arrived (flown by a female ATA Pilot), it already had the markings JO-Y. Billy, wishing to complete his tour on JO-G, got his groundcrew to paint over it on the starboard side, leaving the 'Y' still visible (as shown in the photographs). He flew his last op on PD259 JO-G/JO-Y on 18 August 1944, a matter of two weeks before it was itself lost, on this sortie. |
| RAF Waddington has been granted a licence to remove surface wreckage from the crash site, in part to prevent it being taken by hikers as souvenirs. Since 2008, teams of personnel from Waddington have been making trips to collect the wreckage, which is being reconstructed onto a frame at RAF Waddington Heritage Centre (see photos). |
