Miscellaneous Information
After bailing out, landed near the village of Ferrieres, north of Montargis, and hid in a wood. After four days of disorientation, he was given shelter by the school teacher (Yvette Jublot) in the village of Loup-des-Vignes. He was issued with civilian clothes and then escorted to Paris in May, then on to Lyon on 13th June and then Toulouse, Bordeaux and eventually over the Spanish border through a farmhouse which backed onto a river which formed the border on 21st June. He was issued with papers bearing the name John White and then taken to the Portuguese border where he ventually met with the assistant British Consul, Mr. Connolly for dinner. He proceeded from there to Lisbon where he was placed on a civilian aircraft bound for Bristol (Whitchurch) Airport, arriving back in UK on 15th July 1944. Contracted pleurisy and sadly died two months after his return. More can be read of his evasion in RAF Evaders by Oliver Clutton-Brock (Grub Street), page 270. |
