Miscellaneous Information
James was born on 20 October 1923 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. They lived in Osborne Street, Winnipeg. His father who died in 1939 was a barber and born in St. Joseph, Missouri, USA and his mother was born in Neche, North Dakota. He had five married sisters, and a brother Albert M. Another brother Bombadier Robert W. Young was killed 30 September 1944 and lies in Bergen-op_zoon cemetery. The schools James attended were Riverview Public 1929-1937 (General); Lord Robert’s Public 1937-1938 (General) and Kelvin Tech 1939-1939, (Commercial - grade 9). His sport interests were hockey, football, and skiing and hobbies were machines and metalwork. James worked for C.N.Telegraph as a messenger 1939-1941 followed by working with them as a clerk 1941-1941. He then enlisted on 30 October 1941. |
He embarked from Canada on 16 July 1943 arriving at 3PRC on 23 July 1943. He went on to 24 OTU 10 August 1943, 1659 CU. 6 October 1943,then 429 Squadron on 8 November 1943. He was only 20 years old when he lost his life on 23 April 1944 |

Operation | Düsseldorf. 596 aircraft, 29 losses (4.9%). 2150 tones of bombs were dropped, causing considerable damage, mainly to the northern districts. 56 large industrial premises were hit, of which 7 were destroyed. More than 2000 homes were destroyed, 883 people killed and 593 injured, although these figures were compiled before all the missing had been dug out. |
