Last Operation Information
Start Date | 19-06-1943 |
End Date | 20-06-1943 |
Takeoff Station | Elvington |
Day/Night Raid | Night (95% moon) |
Operation | le Creusot to bomb the Breuil steelworks. 290 aircraft, 3 losses (1.0%). Highly targeted raid in which each bomber was to destroy a particular part of the works by the light of the flares dropped by PFF. In fact the smoke from the flares did much to hamper such identification. Most of the bombs consequently fell on a nearby residential area |
Reason for Loss | Crashed soon after takeoff, just south of Heslington where 4 Group HQ were located |
