Miscellaneous Information
Philip was born in Montreal on 17 February 1919. They all lived at 140 Laurier Ave West, Montreal. His father was a Tailor born in Porosowa, Poland and his mother in Zabludowa, also in Poland. Philip's primary schooling was at Aberdeen and Fairmount in Montreal, PQ, 1926-1933, followed by Montreal Technical School 1933-1934. He then took a correspondence course at Beaux Arts from 1933-1936 in cabinet making, drafting and machining. Philip worked as a travelling salesman for five years for H. Fisher, Woolens, and had also been a Draughtsman. The sports he enjoyed were swimming, skiing and baseball. As a hobby he enjoyed oil painting and he liked automobile driving for which he had a licence. |
He enlisted on 25 November 1940 and after completing his training, which had taken place at Calgary, Yorkton and Brandon, embarked from Halifax on 20 August 1941. On arrival in the U.K. he went to 3 PRC on 7 October 1941, 1 Signals School on 11 November 1941, 20 OTU 14 January 1942 and finally arrived at 431 Squadron on 7 December 1942. |
A newspaper article published after his death told how Philip graduated from Peretz Jewish School, Montreal and his attendance at Tech High. It said Philip was a gifted artist who had studied at Beaux Arts and also at the studio of the artist Alexander Bercovitch. |
