Miscellaneous Information
George was born on 22 June 1916 in Ottawa. Both of his parents were born in Quebec. His father was a business manager and they lived at 287 Besserer Street, Ottawa. He had a brother Allan and sisters Evelyn and Joan Naomi. There was also another sister, Patricia Evelyn who had died aged six years in 1921. George attended Percy Street School 1927-1929, and Glebe Collegiate Institute between 1929 - 1935 (Senior Matric). He specialised in Maths, Science, Physics and Chemistry and obtained a Meteorological Observers Certificate. He went to the High School of Commerce for typewriting, also took a correspondence course in Radio which was not completed. George was in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals at Camp Borden, Barriefield where he was a Signalman Operator between 23 November 1935 and 23 November 1938. He had also worked at the National Research Council, Ottawa as a Laboratory Assistant on sound and acoustics between 1934-1940. |
The sports he took part in were swimming, gymnastics, badminton, football and basketball. His hobbies were reading, philately and paddling. He also enjoyed motor cycling, the radio and had a St John’s Ambulance certificate. |
George enlisted on 20 August 1940 and after training embarked for the U.K. on 13 September 1943. arriving at 3 PRC on 20 September. He was then at 14(P) AFU on 2 November 1943, 24 OTU 7 March 1944. 1659 CU 1 June 1944, He eventually arrived at 427 Squadron on 12 July 1944. He would lose his life less than a month later. |
