Miscellaneous Information
Robert was born on 21 July 1917 at Ogilvie, Manitoba. His father, (who died 1925) was born at North Battleford, Saskatchewan and his mother was born at Plumas, Manitoba. He had a brother William Frederick. He went to school in Winnipeg and was at Isbister School, 1921-1927 (General), Hugh John McDonald 1927-1931 (General), Gordon Bell High School 1931-1934 and Kelvin Technical High 1931-1934 (wood turning and machine shops). He gained High School Entrance and Junior Matric. Robert’s sport interests were baseball and basketball and he was a member of the Y.M.C.A. He worked at Canada Packers, St. Boniface, as a livestock buyer 1935- 1941. He then enlisted on 4 June 1941. |
Robert embarked from Canada on 20 July 1942, arriving at 3 PRC on 30 July 1942, followed by 2(0)AFU 7 August 1942, 30 OTU 1 September 1942, 1656 CU 9 January 1943, 12 Sqn 27 February 1943 and 156 Squadron 30 April 1943. |

Operation | Wuppertal. 630 aircraft, 34 losses (5.4%). An attack on the Elberfeld half of the town- the Barmen half having been devastated a month ago. PFF marking was accurate but creepback was more evident than normal. A post-war British survey suggest that 95% of the Elberfeld half was destroyed. Approximately 1800 deaths, 300 homes destroyed and 171 businesses knocked out. |
