Reason for Loss | Attacked by a Fw190 night-fighter, killing Sgt Withers in his gun turret due to wounds to his chest and back. The pilot had seen the fighter earlier when it had dropped a flare but it returned unseen and despite corkscrewing, the aircraft received multiple hits on its port side. The aircraft made a safe return to England with Sgt Withers's body aboard. This was the crew's first operation. |
