Miscellaneous Information
Francis was born 31 January 1919 in Toronto, where they lived at 10 Glenholme Avenue. His father was born in Toronto and worked as an Insurance Agent and his mother born in New York. He had two sisters, Katherine Moment and Beverly Moment (Moment used as Christian names). Francis went to Regal Road Public School 1924- 1933 followed by Oakwood Collegiate Institute 1933-1939. He gained Entrance, Junior Matric and part Senior Matric (grade XII). Francis worked as a Savings Ledger Keeper at the Dominion Bank from 1939 until enlistment on 29 August 1940. He enjoyed rugby and was on the Senior football team at Regal Road school and four years on the swimming team at Oakwood Coll. |
After enlistment and early training, Francis was posted to the U.K. and arrived on 9 November 1942. He then went to 3 (0) AFU 27 April 1943, 22 OTU 1 June 1943, 1664 CU 8 August 1943 and 427 Squadron on 5 September 1943. |

Operation | Mannheim. 395 aircraft, 23 losses (5.8%). This was one of the larger diversionary raids and accounts for the high losses. By comparison, the main raid (On Berlin) registered 2.0% losses. There was cloud cover over the target and bombing was scattered as a result. Most of the damage fell to the north of the town, where the Daimler Benz car plant suffered a 90% loss in production as a result. 21 deaths on the ground and 7500 people were bombed out. |
