Miscellaneous Information
Born on 14 December 1922 in Winnipeg. He was one of four children having one brother, Frederick and two sisters, Olga Marguerite and Evelyn Marion. His mother was born in Shoal Lake, Manitoba and his father born in England. Sadly his father was not mentally able to work. They lived at Wardlaw Ave, Winnipeg. Philip went to Shoal Lake School between 1930- 1939 where he attained Grade 8 and to Kelvin Technical High, Winnipeg, between 1939-1941, Grade 11. He liked to play Golf. He worked for Bairds Drug Store as a Clerk/ delivery boy, 1938-1941, part time and then at Defence Industries (munitions), as a Laboratory assistant, 1941-1942. |
Philip enlisted on 27 July 1942 and after his early training, embarked from Halifax for the U.K. on 16 June, 1943. He was at 3 PRC on 24 June 1943, 1659 CU 6 July 1943 and then at 434 Squadron on the 25 August 1943. |
When war broke out, so many of the students from Kelvin Tech joined the forces, that they had to discontinue Grade 12. |

Operation | Berlin. 677 aircraft, 46 losses (6.8%). The diversionary raids drew off a significant number of fighters but the German controller was able to re-group the over the target and many aircraft were Lost as a result. The cloud was broken and some ground marking was possible and despite claims by Bomber Command that the bombing was concentrated, the local report says otherwise. Nevertheless, around 180000 people were bombed out and an unusually high proportion of public and administrative buildings were hit, including the Chancellery. |
