Miscellaneous Information
Ronald was born on 7 November 1915 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Both parents were born and married in Birmingham, Warwickshire and his father then worked as a Manager for MacKinnon Steel in Sherbrooke, Quebec. They lived at 20 Aberdeen Avenue in Sherbrooke. He had two sisters, Elsie and Dorothy, and a brother Norman who was serving in England (Lt. Norman Harry Welsh of the 27th Canadian Armoured Division, #3 C.A.C.R.U. Canadian Army, England). Ronald attended Cambridge School, Sherbrooke 1921-1928 (Entrance), Sherbrooke High School 1928-1932 followed by St. Patrick Academy, Sherbrooke 1932-1933, (Junior Matric) He then took a Correspondence course in shorthand, typing and book-keeping at the Ontario Business College in Belleville, Ontario (1939-1940). Ronald worked for several years in the machine shop of the Superheater Co. and then a year in steel assembly at the MacKinnon Steel Corporation where his father was manager, before working as a temporary clerk and then a junior accountant for J.H. Bryce. |
Ronald enlisted one 24 April 1941 at Montreal and after initial training embarked from Canada on 30 April 1942, arriving at 3PRC in the U.K. on 13 May 1942. He then passed through 3 AOS 16 June 1942, 1 (0) AFU 19 June, 1942, 22 OTU 21 July, 1942 and 420 Squadron on 1 October 1942. |
Ronald enjoyed golf, tennis, swimming, skiing and basketball. |
