born in Exeter, Huron County, Ontario on 14 October 1924. His father worked for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario and was born in Mitchell, Ontario, his mother was born in Staffa, Ontario. He lived in Pearl Street, St.Thomas, Ontario and had a sister Marilyn Ruth, a half sister Jean and a half brother Wilbert Harold Ross. William attended Elmdale Public School, St. Thomas, Ont. 1930-1938 (General Course). St. Thomas Collegiate Institute, 1938-1940 (Matric) and Arthur Voaden Vocational School. 1940-1941.(commercial Course). Between 1941-1942 William worked as a clerk in the Imperial Bank, St. Thomas. |
On the 11 November 1942 he enlisted and after training, embarked from Halifax on 10 April 1944 arriving at 3 PRC in the U.K. on 19 April 1944. He then passed through 7 (P)AFU, 24 OTU 29 June 1944, 61 Base 13 September 1944 and 426 Squadron 17 November 1944. |
The sports he was involved in were basketball, baseball and swimming and he enjoyed woodwork as a hobby. |

Operation | Chemnitz- continuation of Operation Thunderclap. 760 aircraft. Severe icing conditions over home bases cost 9 aircraft, especially from 426 Sqn. A further 22 aircraft were lost on the operation. The centre and south of the city were badly damaged by fire. Several important factories were destroyed, including the Siegmar tank engine plant. |
