Miscellaneous Information
Roy was born on 25 December 1916 at Yorkton, Saskatchewan. His father, born in Ontario, had died in 1928 and worked as a plumber and heating engineer his mother was also born in Ontario. He had one married sister, Minnie A. Hancock and two brothers Harold and Russell. Harold was a Sergeant in the army. He attended Yorkton Public School between 1922-1930, (grade 8) followed by the High School 1930-1934 (grade 12). His hobby was woodworking and he played hockey and baseball. He could also drive a car and was familiar with use of firearms. Roy mainly worked in the grocery business. He was a clerk at McMullens Grocery 1934-1936, was a Warehouseman at Scott Fruit Co. between 1936-1938 and then for Smith Fruit Company, 1938-1942 - all in Yorkton. |
He enlisted on 12 May 1942 and after training was posted to the U.K. He embarked from Canada on 16 May 1943 and after arriving at 3PRC was sent to 9(0)AFU on 31 August 1943. He was then at 23 OTU 12 October 1943, 61 Base on 2 February 1944, and 434 Squadron on 18 March 1944. Roy sadly lost his life on 11 June 1944. |
