Miscellaneous Information
John qualified for his pilot's badge (wings) on 30 September 1940 and was made Sergeant from 22 November 1940, in New Zealand. He sailed for the UK on 5 December 1940. Of the 29 NZ pilots on board, only 8 survived the war, a 72% casualty rate. He completed at least 47 operations as a bomber pilot with 9 Sqn RAF (7 operations), 38 Squadron (Middle East, 26 operations) all in Vickers Wellington bombers through 1941. He later flew with 75 (NZ) Squadron (10 operations) in Short Stirlings in 1943. The disparity of the extra (at least 4) operations suggest these were undertaken while in Operational Training Units. Additionally, between January and April 1942 he was attached to British Overseas Airways Corporation to undertake 'special duties'. The Stirling bomber, on return to England after the last operation in bad weather (4 out of 9 aircraft sent by the squadron had returned due to 10/10 cloud and electrical storms), was seen to dive vertically into the ground at Bressingham, Norfolk, 29 miles from 75 Squadron's airfield at Newmarket. A tragic ending to a very dedicated pilot who was seemingly overlooked both in terms of promotion and awards. |
