He had volunteered at the age of 16 and spent a year training in Canada. |
He attended Wrotham Road Primary School, Gravesend followed by the County School for Boys (now Gravesend Grammar School). On leaving school he took a job with Martin's Bank, Elhtam (later Barclay's Bank) and had been a member of the Home Guard before enlisting. |
He was a keen sportsman and was a member of Wesley Tennis Club and Milton Road Methodist Badminton Club (which exists to this day). |

Reason for Loss | Sgt Ventham had been on a flight test that day with his fellow crew. When they got back they were given a lift back from the aircraft on the fire truck but Sgt Ventham fell off, sustained head injuries and was killed. |
