Miscellaneous Information
Nick was born on 22 August 1919 in Vancouver, B.C. His father was born in Grodno, Poland and his mother in Minsk, Russia. There were two more children, Seena born 1914 and a son Walter who had died in 1916 aged 6 months. They lived in Nanaimo, B.C. He attended Elementary School, Nanaimo (General course) 1925-1932 and John Shaw High School 1932-1936 (High School Graduation). Nick worked as a clerk at Mackenzie White and Dunsmuir in Nanaimo between 1936-1941 and was then transferred to another branch in Victoria for a few months until his enlistment. The sports Nick took part in were lacrosse, softball and basketball. |
He enlisted in Vancouver on 21 August 1941 and embarked for the U.K. on 20 July 1942. He reached 3 PRC on 30 July 1942, 10 (0) AFU 7 August 1942, 22 OTU 1 September 1942, 420 Sqn. 24 January 1943, 427 Sqn.17 April 1943, 434 Sqn 15 June 1943 and then back to 420 Squadron on 20 December 1943. |

Operation | Somain to bomb railway installations. 143 aircraft, 1 Halifax Lost The Master Bomber, on seeing that the initial wave of target marking was inaccurate, ordered the main force to wait for a further marking circuit. Most of the force either didn't the order or ignored it and, as a result, much of the bombing fell in open countryside. Only minor damage was caused to the target. |
