Miscellaneous Information
Edwin was born on 12 February 1922 in Aberdeen, Scotland. His mother had also been born in Scotland, at Peterhead, his father was born in St.Ives, Cornwall and was a Chief Petty Officer with the Royal navy. They married in Scotland and eventually moved to Sioux Lookout to be near Mabel's family. His father initially worked at his father in law's bakery but then left to become the Caretaker in the local school. Edwin had brothers John, Creighton, Nicholas, Elvin and Gordon. Their little sister Lily, sadly died when she was only two years old after eating poisonous berries. The school Edwin attended were Sioux Lookout Public School, 1928-1937 (General Grade 7). He then did six months of Grade 9 at Sioux Lookout High. He enjoyed his sports which were hunting, swimming , surfing, board riding and hockey. |
He worked in Mining and Forestry 1937-1940. He was at the Hasaga Gold Mine , Red Lake, working as a machine man on a Mucking Machine, 1940-1942, and worked for the Ontario Forestry Branch, firefighting between May and June 1942. |
Edwin enlisted in Winnipeg on 10 August 1942 and after initial training embarked from Halifax for the U.K. on 16 June 1943. After 3 PRC on 24 June 1943, he went to 1659 CU on 6 July and 405 Squadron on 28 July 1943. |

Operation | Ludwigshafen. 83 aircraft on a purely H2S blind-bombing raid without any target markers. Few details are available but it would appear that the I G Farben factory was hit. The German fighters were sent erroneous information by a broadcast in England leading to most returning to base. As a result only one Lancaster was Lost (1.2%) |
