Operation | Wanne-Eickel synthetic oil plant. 137 aircraft, 4 losses (2.9%). A direct hit on a storage tank caused dense smoke in the area, hampering further bombing. The local report states that whilst there was little damage to the oil plant, the nearby G A V E G chemical plant was destroyed, suggesting that the wrong target was probably marked. |
Reason for Loss | Hit by flak at 19000' over the target while on the bombing run. The fuel tanks and intercom were damaged and the pilot diverted to Woodbridge on return but lost control on his approach and crashed amongst trees about a mile from the airfield. P/O Todd was killed immediately by the flak. |
