Pre-commission service number 1174846. Killed in action on 9 March 1943, two months after being gazetted as a Pilot Officer on 21 January 1943. James was born on 30 August 1911 t. He attended Bablake School from 1924 to 1928, resided at 30 Brookside Avenue and was employed as a journalist with 'The Coventry Evening Telegraph' until enlisting in June 1940. He was married to Dorothy Joan Thompson formerly of Windy Arbour, Kenilworth. A plaque in Coventry War Memorial Park (originally Stoke Heath( paid for by his wife reads "P/O James Burdett Thompson, RAF, Killed in action 9th March 1943". The March to July 1943 edition of 'The Wheatleyan' stated "We regret to learn that Sergt-Observer J. B. Thompson. A member of the editorial staff of the Coventry Evening Telegraph is missing following air operations". |
October 1939 under the headline 'Married at Styechale'; The wedding took place at Styechale Parish Church today between Mr James Burdett Thompson of 16, Browett Road, Coventry and Miss Dorothy Jean Mottram, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. H. Mottran of 480, Binley Road, Binley. The bridegroom is a member of the Editorial Staff of the Midland Daily Telegraph. Miss Mottram who is a member of the Pharmceutical Society is the assistant dispenser at the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital. She is well known in tennis circles and is a Warwickshire County Player. The ceremony was conducted by the Vicar of Styechale and Mr. H. S. Linton was best man. Afterwards a reception was held at the Pepper Pot Café, Coventry and the bride and bridegroom left for a honeymoon in Devon. |
