Miscellaneous Information
Alan was born on 21 April 1918 at Weston, Ontario. His father was born at Glandford Co., Ontario and worked as a clerk in Weston Town Hall and his mother was born in Bolton, Ontario. He had a brother Private John Stanley Smuck who was overseas in the RCASC. He attended Weston Memorial Public school between 1925-1933, Weston Collegiate 1934-1939 (Jnr. Matric). He then took a special Commercial Course at Weston, Collegiate in 1939. The sports Alan enjoyed were hockey, baseball and basketball. He worked as a Sales Clerk in 1939 for the Canada Cycle & Motor Co. Ltd. in Weston. |
On 8 January 1941 Alan enlisted and after completing his training embarked from Canada on 23 October 1941 and arrived in the U.K. at 3 PRC on 14 November 1941. |

Operation | Aachen. 374 aircraft, 20 losses (5.3%). A strong tail wind led to the main force arriving early and when PFF marked the target, so many aircraft were waiting that the town appeared to erupt into flames. Almost 3000 buildings were destroyed including apartment blocks, so the number of dwellings destroyed was some 16828. The cathedral, the town hall and many other civic amenities were also classed as severely damaged. |
