Last Operation Information
Start Date | 20-02-1945 |
End Date | 21-02-1945 |
Takeoff Station | Upwood |
Day/Night Raid | Night (68% moon) |
Operation | Dusseldorf to mark the Rhenania Ossag oil refinery. 173 aircraft, 5 losses. A very accurate attack with all production being stopped at the facility |
Reason for Loss | Attacked from below by a night fighter during their bombing run, with bomb doors open, all fuel tanks set ablaze. The Pilot, F/Lt Andrew Desmond Pelly DFC, gave the order to abandon the aircraft and remained at the controls to allow the crew time to exit. Tragically F/O Sinfield's parachute failed to open. |
