Miscellaneous Information
Donald was born at Harrow, Ontario on 27 September 1924. His father was born at Colchester, Ontario and was a fisherman and his mother was born at Leamington, Ontario. He had four sisters, Elinore, Margaret, Helen and Iris. A fifth sister, Muriel had sadly died as a baby. He also had three brothers George, Edward and Gordon. This brother sadly also lost his life in the army: Private Gordon Hillier , 9 September 1944, aged 22. Donald attended both Wheatley Public and Kingsville Public schools between 1931-1937 and then Kingsville High 1937-1939. The sports he took part in were baseball, hockey and rugby. Between 1939 and 1942 he carried out numerous jobs including for Canadian Canners, cement labouring, and for the Polymer Corporation in Sarnia. |
He then enlisted on 25 November 1942 and after training was posted to the U.K. Donald embarked from Halifax on 5 March 1944, arriving at 3 (RCAF) PRC on 15 March 1944 then going on to 24 OTU 4 April 1944, 61 Base 26 July 1944, and 408 Squadron on 7 December 1944. Sadly Donald was then to lose his life on 21 February 1945. |

The only large raid on this town of the war. 1116 tons of high explosives were dropped and the town was said to be 39% destroyed. 64% of the buildings were destroyed including the cathedral and many municipal and cultural buildings. 239 people were killed and 35000 bombed out (from a population of just 58000) |
