Miscellaneous Information
Charles was born in Vancouver on 30 November 1922. His father James, an engineer, was born in Scotland and his mother was born in England. Charles had one sister and two brothers. He went to Vancouver Technical School 1937-1938 (grade 9), then 1938-1939 he managed part of grade 10 but left before the finish. He also took a Stationary Steam Course at University. He enjoyed skating and all outdoor sports. He was a Warehouse worker at Mac+Mac , Vancouver 1939. As a messenger for CPR Telegraphs 1939-1940 and CNR Telegraphs as a messenger 1940-1940. 1941- 1942 he worked as a fireman for B.C Pulp and Paper Mills and then as truck driver in 1942 for A.E Burnett. a trucking contractor. |
Charles enlisted on 9 October 1942 and later embarked from Halifax on 26 August 1943 for the U.K., arriving at 3 PRC on 2 September 1943, he went on to 82 OTU 21 September 1943, 31 Base 30 November 1943, and 514 Squadron on 8 July 1944. Charles was to lose his life just two weeks later. He had only been married for four months. |

Operation | Homberg- Meerbeck oil plant. 158 aircraft (149 Lancasters and 11 Mosquitoes) of which 20 Lancasters were downed, mainly due to night-fighter activity. Caused severe damage to the plant, resulting in output dropping from 6000 tones of fuel per day to as little as 120. The 8th Air Force also hit this target. |
