Miscellaneous Information
Irvine was born 17 February 1923, in Manitoba, Winnipeg. He was born Isdore but became known as Irvine. His father, deceased, was born in Romania and his mother in Russia. Irvine was raised in a Jewish orphanage until aged 9 since both his parents were deaf mute. He returned to the family home when cosnidered old enough, aged 9. He had a brother Saul who was a Private with the 9th Canadian Field Ambulance and a sister, Corp. Patricia Maxine Rothstein who worked in the District Audit Office at Fort Osborne, Winnipeg. The Schools he attended were Luxton School between 1932-1938 (general) and St. John’s High (Technical) School 1939-1941 (Matric). Irvine’s main sport interests were track and field and also rugby, although he did play baseball and football. He also liked to make model aircraft. |
He enlisted on 8 August 1941 and after his early training was posted to the U.K.embarking from Canada on 27 October 1942. He arrived at 3PRC on 6 November 1942 then went on to 4 AOS 9 March 1943, 11 OTU on 20 April 1943, 1665 CU 1 July 1943 and 75 Squadron on 29 July 1943. Sadly, young Irvine lost his life just over a week later on 6 August 1943, aged twenty. |
