Miscellaneous Information
Walter was born at New York City, on 3 July 1915. His father, a Banker, was born in Berlin, Germany and his mother born in New Jersey, USA. The schools he attended were Bovee School, New York City 1921-1929 (entrance equivalent); Morristown High School, New Jersey, 1929-1933 (Jnr. Matric); Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts 1933-1937 (B.A.(cum laude); Harvard University 1937-1938 (1st year Dr.of Arts); Yale Uni Connecticut, 1938-1941 (Law). Sport interests were tennis and swimming and he enjoyed mountain climbing. |
Walter enlisted on 24 October 1941 at Ottawa (while the United States was still neutral) and after training embarked for the U.K. from Halifax on 26 August 1943. He arrived at 3 PRC on 2 September 1943, 15(P) AFU 21 September 1943, 407 Sqn 1 February 1944, 19 OTU 22 February 1944 and 158 Squadron on 29 July 1944. Walter was to lose his life the following month on 18 August 1944. |
