Miscellaneous Information
Mentioned in Despatches June 1944 |
Harry was born on 26 May 1919 at Derby Township, Ontario. Both parents were born in Ontario, his father was a farmer and was born at Derby and his mother at Walkerton. He had three brothers, Bob, Bruce and Jack. He attended S.S. No.9 school at Derby 1924-1930 and at Tara Continuation school, 1930 - 1934 (Jnr. Matric). During 1939 Harry also took a short course in General repair work. Between 1934-1940 he worked on the farm at home. The sports he took part in were hockey, softball and football and his hobbies were amateur photography and music. |
Harry enlisted on 9 May 1940 and after training he was posted to the U.K. Little information is shown in his papers about his movements after enlistment. He was taken as a prisoner in 1941 and it is believed that whilst attempting to escape from a prison train taking him to another camp he had been shot and later had died from the gunshot wounds. His death is recorded as 29 April 1942. |
