Reason for Loss | Due to unforecast cloud many of the aircraft on this raid suffered from icing up, some of them crashing as a result. LV949 was similarly affected leading to the bomb load being jettisoned and some of the crew baled out. However the pilot was able to regain control once he had descended below the cloud base and the aircraft and remaining crew made a safe landing at Carnaby airfield without damage to the aircraft. Sadly, F/S Ray, who had been one of the crew members to bale out, made a bad landing and was killed, it is though somewhere in the Bridlington area. |
