Miscellaneous Information
James was born on 2 July 1923 at Wellington Count. His father was born at Woodstock, Ontario and his mother at Malham, Yorkshire, England. His father was a Government employee of the Soldier Settlement Board, and was also a veteran of the World War I. He had two brothers John and Douglas. The schools he attended were New Liskeard, Public, Ontario, 1930-1936 (general) and 1936-1941 (Jnr Matric). His sports were skiing, swimming, and softball. He was also a Boy Scout for six years and his hobbies were drumming and playing the trumpet. James worked for two months during 1940 as a mill hand for Hill Clark Francis and then for one month In 1941 handling peas as a machinists helper at Temiskaming Canning Co., North Liskeard. June -October 1941 was spent as a Private with the 2nd Battn. Algonquines regiment . |
James then enlisted on 20 October 1941 and after training was sent to the U.K. He a arrived at 3PRC on 6 November 1942 and then on to 10 (0) AFU 15 December 1942, 23 OTU on 23 February 1943 and 426 Squadron 14 May 1943. It was from here that this young man at the age of nineteen was to lose his life on 12 June 1943. |
The news of James's death must have been doubly devastating as on 23 November 1942 his brother WO2 Douglas Leroy Rawson, R/69258 was lost. He was flying with 14 (RAF) Sqn and is buried in the Military Cemetery at Suez, Egypt. He was born on 19 August 1921 at Parry Sound, Ontario, enjoyed building model aeroplanes and like his brother, had been a member of the Boy Scouts. |
