John was born on 29 April 1923 in Toronto, Ontario. His father was a carpenter, born in Toronto and his mother was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. John had just one brother, Albert Donald who sadly died in 1928. He also had an adopted sister Lillian. He attended Earl Haig school, Toronto 1929-1936 (Public) and then Eastern High, school of Commerce, 1936-1941 (Commercial). His sport interests were baseball, handball and bowling. John worked as an Office Clerk at Carswell Company Ltd 1941-1941, and then carried out office and stock work for Research Enterprises from 1941 until enlistment in 1942. |
He enlisted on 25 November 1942 and after training embarked from Halifax on 10 April 1944 arriving in the U.K. at 3PRC on 19 April 1944. He then went to 8(0) AFU 11 July 1944, 19 OTU 8 August 1944, 74 Base 10 November 1944, and 76 Squadron 29 March 1945. It was from here that John sadly lost his life the following month, 25 April 1945, shortly before his 22nd birthday. |
