Miscellaneous Information
Berle was born at Mannville, Alberta on 24 August 1923. His father was born in Michigan, USA and worked as a CNR Section Foreman and his mother was born at Carleton, Ontario. He had brothers Laurence Nelson and Garner Heaslop. Another brother P/O J/18880 P/O Maurice Milton Milton sadly died 16 December 1943 on the strength of 426 Squadron - see https://losses.internationalbcc.co.uk/loss/222892/. He attended the Minburn School between 1930-1940 and then worked at a Beauty Parlour, at Barber Shop Supply Co. as a clerk undertaking seasonal work and then at CNR as a Section Labourer in 1942. The sports he enjoyed were hockey and baseball and his hobbies were model aircraft and Amateur radio. |
Berle enlisted on 7 August 1942. After training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 16 June 1943, arriving at 3 PRC on 24 June. He was then at 1664 CU from 6 July 1943, and 427 Squadron from 23 August 1943. Sadly Berle was to lose his life on 21 January 1944, just one month after his brother Maurice. |

Last Operation Information
Start Date | 20-01-1944 |
End Date | 21-01-1944 |
Takeoff Station | Leeming |
Day/Night Raid | Night (27% moon) |
Operation | Berlin. 769 aircraft, 35 losses (4.6%). Once again the German controller was able to get fighters into the stream early on the approach and they scored steadily throughout the night until the stream left the mainland. The Germans had now learned not to be deceived by minor diversionary raids. Berlin was completely cloud covered and, although sky-marking went to plan and H2S sets showed that the east of the city was hit, Berlin recorded no bombing whatsoever. It is not clear whether this was deliberate concealment of the extent of the damage or whether the raid simply missed the city completely. |
