Miscellaneous Information
Douglas was born at Sarnia, Lambton, Ontario on 15 October 1923. His father was born at Kerwood, Ontario and worked as a druggist and his mother was born in Sarnia. He had one brother, Neil Proctor Pole. The schools he attended were George Street Public School, 1929-1936 in Sarnia, followed by Sarnia Collegiate Institute 1936-1942. His hobby was collecting old coins and athletics and he enjoyed a wide variety of sports including Rugby, tennis, hockey, water polo and lacrosse. During the summer of 1941 Douglas worked as a watchman on a boat for Imperial Oil, Sarnia. |
He enlisted on 27 March 1942 and after his initial training, he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 22 October 1943. He arrived at 3 PRC on 31 October then went on to 6 (0) AFU 4 January 1944, 24 OTU 22 February 1944, 61 Base 12 May 1944, and 429 Squadron 6 September 1944. Sadly Douglas was to lose his life the following month on 23 October 1944.. |

Operation | Essen. 1055 aircraft- a record and yet remarkably 5 Group was not called upon at all. This was the heaviest raid on Essen so far. 8 losses (0.76%). 4538 tons of bombs were dropped, most of which were high explosives since it was considered that there was little left to burn in the target area. 607 buildings were destroyed and 812 seriously damaged. 662 people were killed. |
