Miscellaneous Information
Hartnell-Beavis became a PoW when Halifax JD207 ZA-V of 10 Squadron Melbourne was shot down on the return leg of an operation to Essen on 25th-26th July 1943. He famously assisted in making the memorial at Stalag Luft III to the 50 airmen who were shot following the Great Escape. He had studied architecture before enlisting and worked with Wilton Todd (169 Sqn) and Dickie Head (139 Sqn) to create the memorial. He also wrote 'Final Flight', Merlin Books, ISBN 978-0863032516, which refers to this crash. |

Reason for Loss | Hit by lightning, causing the aircraft to make an emergency landing at Hendon aerodrome. After two attempts to land in very bad weather he landed beside the runway on the third attempt and could not avoid a pill box. Both the pilot, P/O F J Hartnell-Beavis and Sgt Phipp were badly injured in the crash and Sgt Phipp died of his injuries. |
