| John was born on 19 September 1919 at Hull, Yorkshire, England. Both parents were born in Yorkshire, England. He has a brother Charles Jeffrey Phillips. He went to Bow View School, 1925-1933 followed by Western Canada Technical school 1933-1935 where he studied motor mechanics, electricity and woodwork. John enjoyed playing golf, hockey and swimming and his hobby was amateur radio. In 1936 he was employed as a truck driver for Pekisko Hills Oil Co., and then as a Board Marker for Calgary Stock Exchange between 1936-1937. Between 1937-1938 he was a Rough Neck at Chandler Oil Drillers and finally was a Separator Man at Davies Petroleum, 1938-1939. |
| He enlisted on 20 June 1940 and after training in Canada was sent to the U.K..He arrived at 3 PRC on 20 April 1941 and then went to 2. S.S. 28 April 1941, 23 OTU on 1 July 1941, and on to 15 Squadron on 31 August 1941. John sadly lost his life from 15 Squadron on 9 March 1942. |
