Last Operation Information
Start Date | 23-12-1943 |
End Date | 24-12-1943 |
Takeoff Station | Witchford |
Day/Night Raid | Night (13% moon) |
Operation | Berlin. 379 aircraft, 16 Lancasters Lost (4.2%). Fewer night-fighters were encountered than in recent raids on Berlin, partly due to a successful diversionary raid by Mosquitoes on Leipzig. The target was cloud covered and more than half of the initial wave of PFF aircraft had difficulties with their H2S sets and a result, marking was scattered. The south-eastern suburbs sustained light damage only. |
Reason for Loss | Shot down by a night-fighter flown by Ofw. Kurt Emler of 1./JG302 over Berlin at 04:20 (no altitude given). |
