Miscellaneous Information
William was born on 27 July 1922 at Toronto, Ontario. His father was born in England and worked as a Butcher and his mother was born in Scotland. They lived at Lansing, Ontario. He had two brothers, Donald Bruce and John Knox. The school he attended was the Memorial Public school, Lansing, Ontario between 1929- 1938. William mostly liked to engage in swimming, bowling and tennis for his sports and his hobby was woodwork. He worked at R. MacMillen, butchers of York Mills, Toronto 1938–1941. |
William enlisted on 19 May 1941 and after training was posted to the U.K. He embarked from Canada on 28 October 1942 arriving at 3 PRC on 6 November 1942 before continuing to 7 AGS 16 January 1943, 23 OTU 23 February 1943 and 429 Squadron on 14 May 1943. Sadly William was to lose his life the following month on 22 June 1943. |

Operation | Krefeld. 705 aircraft, 44 losses (6.2%) with night-fighters counting for most of the losses (the night was moonlit). PFF marking was near-perfect (using Oboe). A large fire in the centre of Krefeld raged unchecked for many hours. Over 5500 houses destroyed, 1056 people killed and 72000 bombed out of their homes. |
