Miscellaneous Information
Sidney was born on 3 January 1922 in Grace hospital, Winnipeg. His father, who was deceased by the time of Sidney's enlistment, was born in England and had worked as a Store delivery man and his mother was born in Selkirk, Manitoba. His mother had re-married a Leonard Thompson and he now had three half sisters Marlyne Dale (8) and 22 month old twins, Helen and Jean. They were now living at Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines. He went to Isbister School, Winnipeg, 1932-1936 (General); Hugh John MacDonald School 1936-1937 (General) and Pointe Du Bois, Manitoba from 1937 onwards (completed Grade 10). Sidney had a couple of delivery jobs between 1932-1936 whilst still at school and before moving away from Winnipeg. One was selling Liberties for the Liberty Company and another was helping at the Tribune. During the summer holidays of 1939-1942 Sidney was caretaker of the tennis court for the Pointe Du Bois Tennis Club, before returning to school. The sports he engaged in were tennis, hockey and swimming and curling. |
He enlisted on 24 January 1941 and embarked from Canada on 12 November 1941 for the U.K. He arrived at 3 PRC 23 November 1941, 7 AGS 27 May 1942, 23 OTU 2 June 1942 and 419 Squadron 19 August 1942. |

Bad weather also encountered in Germany and little PFF marking had taken place. Moderate damage including a hospital and two churches. PFF marked the neighbouring town of Lutterade by mistake and much of the bombing fell there in error. |
