John was born at Woodstock, Ontario on 24 August 1914. His parents were both born in Woodstock, his father working as a Road Superintendent. He attended the Public School, S.S.No.4, East Zorra, Ontario between 1920-1927 and then four years at Woodstock Collegiate Institute, 1928-1931 (Jnr. Matric). His sport interests were softball, hockey, golf and occasionally riding. Between 1935-1939 John worked as a machine operator for the Firestone Company at Woodstock, Ontario. John had spent some time between 1939-1940 helping out as an attendant at the Ontario Hospital before enlisting on 21 June 1940 at London, Ontario. |
After training he embarked for the U.K. arriving at 3PRC on 17 April 1941. He then went on to 17 OTU on 22 April 1941 and then to 226 Squadron on 1 August 1941. Just days later on 10 August 1941, John very sadly lost his life. |
