Miscellaneous Information
Donald was born at Milltown, New Brunswick on 29 January 1921. His father, a Customs Officer, was born at Milltown and his mother at St. Stephen, New Brunswick. He had one married sister and a younger brother John. He attended Milltown Public School, 1927-1938 (grade XI) and Mount Allison University, Sackville, 1938-1942 (completed college. B.Sc.). His sport interests were baseball and Track and he became a well known athlete. Some of his track and field records stand to this day. Donald was an honour graduate of Mount Allison Uni who excelled in sport, especially track and field. |
Known as Don. He enlisted on 9 June 1942 and after training embarked from Canada for the U.K. on 30 June 1943, arriving at 3PRC on 8 July 1943. He went on to 6(0)AFU. 5 October 1943, 24 OTU 16 November 1943, 61 Base 24 March 1944 and 420 Squadron on 3 May 1944. Sadly, Donald was to lose his life on 8 June 1944. |

Operation | Achères- to attack railway yards. Part of a 337 bomber strong force to bomb various lines of communications behind the Normandy beachhead. There was less cloud cover than the previous night with all targets being accurately bombed and fewer civilians killed. Because the targets were further inland than recent raids, the German night-fighters had a greater opportunity to infiltrate the bomber stream and as a result, losses were higher. 28 aircraft were Lost (8.3%). |
